Freshman Wendell Moore Jr. scored on a putback as time expired to help No. 7 Duke rally past North Carolina 98-96 in overtime in a wild renewal of the rivalry Saturday night.

The No. 7 Blue Devils trailed 84-81 with just 4 seconds to go with guard Tre Jones at the free-throw line. Jones hit his first shot, then, with Duke down two, intentionally missed the second. He was able to secure the rebound and drained the game-tying basket to force overtime as time expired.

Jones finished with 28 points to lead the Blue Devils who trailed for most of the night and led for only 1:47 of game action.

“He was at another level tonight,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said of Jones. “We won because of that kid.”

“We didn’t have our best game tonight, but we continued to fight until the clock hit zero,” Jones said in his postgame interview. “And it took that entire time for us to get the win tonight.”

Cole Anthony scored 24 points to lead the Tar Heels (10-13, 3-9), who appeared unexpectedly in control of this one much of the way — only to be undone by missed free throws and an inability to come up with one or two more clutch plays to close it out.

The win also keeps Duke (20-3, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) on the heels along with No. 8 Florida State, No. 5 Louisville, which won Saturday to improve to 12-1 in the ACC.
