Jalen Hurts and the Sooners’ offense seemed to stall at UCLA’s 30-yard line. Instead of playing it safe with a field-goal attempt, head coach Lincoln Riley called on Hurts to use his legs and it paid off with a gorgeous touchdown run.
He has completed 34-of-41 passes for 591 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. He has a 252.3 passer rating and is averaging 14.5 yards per attempt – both ahead of where Mayfield and Murray were at this point during their respective Heisman-winning seasons. He’s also got 372 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He rushed for 150 yards (including 99 on the opening drive) against UCLA.
Jalen Hurts is the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy no doubt. Despite Sooner fatigue among Heisman voters after Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield each won the award in back-to-back years, Hurts’ start to the season cuts through all of that. His stats are simply unreal so far.
