Jalen Brunson, the 2017-18 consensus NCAA player of the year and a key element of the Wildcats’ two most recent national championship teams, has declared for the upcoming NBA draft. Brunson, a junior, averaged 18.9 points, 4.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds, and his flexibility in both the backcourt and the post provided Villanova with a multi-pronged threat during his time as a Wildcat. Mikal Bridges, one of the stars of Villanova’s run to the 2018 national championship, will not return for his senior season. The All-American forward announced Tuesday morning that he will enter the NBA draft. Bridges, a projected lottery pick, told ESPN that his effectiveness on both sides of the floor as an athletic slasher with a deadly 3-point shot who can defend multiple positions makes him an ideal NBA prospect. Marc J. Spears writes the parents of Duke freshman center Wendell Carter Jr. told ESPN’s The Undefeated on Wednesday morning that their son is still undecided about entering the 2018 NBA draft. While his parents have opposite views, both say they are not pressuring their teenager to make a decision.

UNC Asheville hired Mike Morrell as its new men’s basketball coach on Wednesday. Morrell has been an assistant on Shaka Smart’s staffs with Texas (2015-18) and Virginia Commonwealth (2011-15). He replaces Nick McDevitt, who left to become the head coach at Middle Tennessee State. By ESPN

Wake Forest and West Virginia will compete in the inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitation college basketball tournament next November. ESPN announced the new eight-team tournament on Wednesday. The tournament will take place Nov. 15-16 and Nov. 18 at the HTC Center at Coastal Carolina. Other schools participating in the early season event include Cal State Fullerton, St. Joseph’s UCF, Valparaiso and Western Kentucky. ESPN says an eighth team will be announced at a later date.
