Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles), athletics have always come natural to Tarek. From the age of four he cannot remember finishing a day of school and NOT having practice in the afternoon. Soccer, basketball and flag football engulfed his youth and it was from the elementary age that he knew sports was going to be a part of his life.
It’s through sport that Tarek found more than a passion of sports journalism, but a vehicle to share Christ’s love. With the gift of basketball he has had the opportunity to travel on four mission trips where he used basketball to draw common ground with people that he would have never had the chance to meet otherwise.
Traveling to China, Japan (twice) and Accra, Ghana he played pick-up basketball with locals, ran basketball camps for children and even had the chance to compete in tournament, which was a humbling and eye-opening adventure, to say the least.
During his time in college, Tarek was able to experience the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics. After playing college basketball at Master’s College and Moorpark College, he spent two years in the Northeast where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Communications/Sports Journalism and a Minor in Religious Studies from Springfield College, also known as the Birthplace of Basketball.
